After two hard days of motoring, today we got to sail. But we didn’t get out right away, this was a coffee in the cockpit, journaling and drawing, yoga on the foredeck kind of morning.
What a relief to just stop. We can both be so driven and there was much to do to prepare and get underway. And then there was the need to make tracks to ensure we’d make it to Bellingham in time for our grandson’s graduation on Saturday.
We woke this morning to glorious sunshine and clear skies. Our next destination, Chuckanut Bay, was only a short 10 miles away and we wouldn’t be fighting currents. We could take as much time as we wanted this morning.
After coffee and doing a quick sketch of my view, I popped in earbuds, grabbed a yoga mat and went forward on the deck. I was able to find a tight space in front of the mast to fit my mat. David grabbed his resistant bands and searched out anchors with space to do his workout. We plan to get off the boat to walk and hike as often as we can, but it won’t always be possible. So, we need to work out how to workout on board.
Today’s workout could not have been more magical. We are the only boat tucked into the small bay on the north side of Cypress Head on Cypress Island. The sun is shinning and light wisps of fog swirl around. There is an eagle perched less than 100 yards away—our audience. I have beautiful music—flute and sitar—playing in my ear as I move through stretches and poses. I am in heaven.
After breakfast we row our dingy to the little tombolo beach to explore the head and then walk up a steep trail that accesses the island’s trail system. We walk a couple of miles through still forest—I can’t think of a better way to get my steps in.
After lunch a promising NW breeze motivates us to get going. We run our motor long enough to get off the DNR bouy and raise our sails. The angle of the wind is perfect to take us all the way to our destination on a single tack. The Gods smiled on us today. Glory, glory.
